A Few Words on Nutrition and Food Quality

The following is an excerpt from The Holistic Health Guide, Natural Care for the Whole Dog by Dr. Doug Knueven, DVM, CVA, CVC: “It seems to me that, conventionally, we are going at canine nutrition from a totally wrong direction. We start with ingredients that carnivores were never meant to eat, then we strip out all the nutrients with our processing, and finally we sprinkle in some synthetic vitamins and supplements to try to balance obvious deficiencies. A more intelligent approach would be to start with a look at what canines have evolved eating over the past five million years. Evolution is a slow process, and dogs have certainly not adapted to processed foods during the past 70 years that these food have been available…”

Many commercial pet foods contain additives, grains, and low-quality or unsafe meat. Additives that are found in our pets’ foods include artificial flavors, artificial colors, and preservatives, which can all be harmful to your pets. In nature a dog’s diet would not have included certain grains (corn, white rice, wheat, etc), which are used in almost all commercial pet foods as a binding agent to keep the kibble pieces together. The meats that are used to produce most commercial pet foods are not regulated the way they are for human consumption, thus leaving the source and quality of these meats unknown to the public. These foods are then processed in such a way that the heat & pressure used destroys most of the nutrients including vitamins, enzymes, and amino acids.

A natural diet is quite beneficial to your four-legged loved ones. Changing to a diet that emulates what your dog would eat in the wild makes the most sense. Wild dogs eat a diet that includes meat, organ meat, bones, and fruits & vegetables. Just like humans, wild dogs do not eat the same exact thing every day; they provide themselves with a rotation diet. This diet offers them all of the nutrients they need to keep healthy.

There are now several high-end kibbles and canned dog foods on the market that have gone above and beyond the majority of commercial foods by using high-quality human grade ingredients. They come very close to feeding a natural or raw diet, especially when fed on a rotation basis and in conjunction with the proper supplements. The foods, treats, and supplements we carry fall into this category, and have never been involved in a recall, so we are proud to offer them to “our dogs.”

We have also started to carry raw diets by Bravo, Nature's Variety, and Primal. Raw foods come frozen, so we cannot keep a large inventory on them. They must be special ordered and delivered as soon as we get them.

Don't forget about flea & tick season. These pesky creatures can transmit debilitating diseases. No treatment or vaccine is 100% effective, but the more you do the better your chances of avoiding disease. We carry the most popular brands of spot-on treatments, and can special order many others.
